The first time I saw the Laser Cats short on Saturday Day Night Live, I wasn’t really impressed. By the 4th Laser Cats, with Steve Martin, the running gag had grown on me. Then by the time they got both James Cameron and Steven Spielberg on board, the SNL Digital Shorts had reached all-time classic status. If you don’t like the potty humor of Lonely Island’s music videos that were a staple of SNL, Laser Cats are a good, clean alternative that anyone can enjoy.
Now Lonely Island and Seth Meyers have a podcast where they spend 45 minutes deep diving into each Laser Cats short. That’s too much time to spend discussing 5-minute videos where idiots run around with cats pretending to shoot lasers out of their mouths, you say? It’s not long enough, I say! The runtime of these podcasts flies by and you’re left wishing for just a little bit more insider Laser Cats knowledge.
Seth Meyers seems to have some disdain for Laser Cats and the Lonely Island guys aren’t having any of it, happy to defend their artistic masterpiece in this podcast series. There are two episodes out so far, but it seems like they’re going to do one for all 7(!) Laser Cats shorts produced (so far)! Maybe this podcast will inspire a Laser Cats 8 next time Andy Samberg hosts?
