Oinking Acres

Oinking Acres

Ever hear of a pig rescue? I hadn’t until I stumbled upon Oinking Acres a couple years back on Facebook while looking for activities to do with my kid. I’d seen tons of dog, cat, and even ferret rescue organizations, but pigs were definitely a new one to me.

The sad reality is that there’s no such thing as a pocket pig, or a pot bellied pig that stays tiny it’s whole life. They inevitably grow up into fairly large animals that uneducated owners didn’t plan for and don’t want to, or know how to, care for. Thus the needs for organizations like Oinking Acres that rescue discarded pet pigs and abused livestock.

The cool thing about Oinking Acres is that while they’re not a petting zoo, they do allow visitors to come and interact with their animals for a small donation. Those donations are then used to help keep the farm running. They also take in other animals in need, so you may meet goats, cats, donkeys, ducks, chickens, rabbits, or other animals.

Most of the animals on the farm are up for adoption to responsible owners. If you’re like my family though, and that’s not an option, you can at least visit for the day, bring some Cheerios and carrots to feed the pigs, and walk around and explore. There are friendly volunteers on site to answer questions about the animals.

If petting a pig is on your bucket list, this is definitely a great place to check out. They’re in Brownsburg, Indiana, but if you’re not local, they do have a Youtube and Instagram for you to check out all the cuteness.
